Are your fingers looking for an indoor place to jam away during these winter months? The Fiddlers' Green in Worcester, MA holds monthly jams that are open to the public.
As the cooler weather moves in and closes out the New England Bluegrass Festival circuit for yet another season, jams with musicians grow more difficult to come by. To remedy this situation, a few local music lovers living around the Worcester County area teamed with the owners of Fiddlers’ Green Irish Pub in order to hold bluegrass jam sessions on the first Sunday of each month. Pickin’, Sawin’ and Singin’ the Night AwayLocated on 19 Temple Street in Worcester, MA, Fiddler’s Green Pub opens its doors to pickers between the hours of 4:00 – 8:00 PM. Ample free parking is available for all music enthusiasts. The style of music played is strictly traditional Bluegrass; country pickers need not join and percussionists will be asked to leave a circle. The Bluegrass Jam is open to acoustic musicians of every level of expertise. Whether one chooses to pick a banjo or a mandolin, or prefers to slide on a dobro, this is a community that shares its music knowledge and talents with all new comers looking to take part in the jam experience. Each session is a great event for those new to the jam scene to check out and to learn the strings from. There are three separate rooms enabling more than one jam to take place at one time, which allows each person to decide which session would make the ideal fit. While the more experienced performers tend to take the lead, inexperienced musicians are encouraged to play along quietly to pick up new songs and skills while standing on the outskirts until ready to keep tempo. Singers, if you aren’t sure of the words to a specific song, let others in toward the center of the circle in order to take the reins. The Bluegrass Jam website lists additional etiquette rules in place to ensure that these sessions are enjoyed by all. Friends and Family are Invited to Take Part in the ExperienceNot everyone is born with the coordination that it takes to conquer a stringed instrument. Those not cut out to take part in a session are still invited to come inside to listen and enjoy traditional music tunes. A large bar area is open for an adult beverage or two. There are also large TVs to check the score of a local sporting game in addition to Keno screens. Fiddlers’ Green offers an array of palette-pleasing snacks, all for about $5. From buffalo wings and tater skins, to burgers and chicken tenders, hungry stomachs will be put at ease without breaking the bank. This pub is a great stop on an early Sunday evening to let go of your cares before heading back to the office on Monday morning. If you can’t make it on Sunday, October 4th, pencil the Fiddlers’ Green Irish Pub into your planner and catch the jam scheduled in November.
